For our Kaxinawa culture, Rapé (Powdered Tobbaco snuff, pronounced Rah-Peh)is used for healing of certain physical illnesses and also spiritual rituals. Rapé is used in the treatment of some diseases and promotes physical and spiritual cleansing.
It is a traditional indigenous medicine. Its use has been known for many centuries. It provides a deep cleansing and can cause some reactions such as excessive sweating, vomiting and weakness.
Snuff is a sacred medicine for us indigenous people and when used correctly, with supervision, it does not cause dependence.
In our indigenous culture, snuff is prepared with a purpose, therefore, only shamans and shaman apprentices are allowed to prepare the substance, as they are considered trusted people by the village.
Depending on the intention of the people who apply and receive the snuff, the substance may or may not have beneficial effects such as healing and well-being or harmful effects, causing illness and even spiritual ills.
In other words, the ritual of Rapé is an act of courage and trust between those who apply and everyone who participates.
The use of powdered tobbaco is gaining space again around the world and in Brazil precisely because of its benefits to the mind and in the treatment of diseases.
It has a calming effect and makes it possible to control emotions for a long time; its properties have power both to "sharpen" the mind and to aid in concentration; can be used to treat chronic conditions such as sinusitis and migraine; It can also be used to detoxify and cleanse the energy field of the mind and body.
It helps in the fight against respiratory diseases and colds, as it is known to cleanthe airways.
After preparation, the snuff turns into a powder that is inhaled, first through one side of the nostril and then through the other, never through both nostrils at the same time, so that whoever uses it creates a connection for the substance to act.
In order for the rapé to be inhaled correctly, a tool called tepi is used.
Before the ceremony for the use of Rapé, an energy cleansing ritual is performed on site with protective herbs and resins taken from certain trees.
